The Regina Viarum, queen of roads, begun by Appius Claudius Caecus in 312 BC from Rome toward Capua and on to Brindisi. Cut stone, straight as a rule, cambered for drainage. Rome crucified 6,000 captured rebels of Spartacus along its roadside in 71 BC.
