Overview
The Mother Road from Chicago to Santa Monica, established in 1926 and fully paved by 1938. It carried Dust Bowl migrants west, postwar vacationers and the myth of the open road before bypassing interstates killed it by 1985. Stretches survive as Historic Route 66.
