Overview
The stretch of US 550 between Ouray and Silverton in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, following a toll road pioneered by Otto Mears in the 1880s. It crosses Red Mountain Pass at about 3,358 m with sheer drops and few guardrails. Theories about the name range from construction cost to ore in the fill.
